Taking Opportunities to New Heights

One of the most confusing pieces of advice that I have ever been given is “don’t be afraid of new opportunities“.

Aren’t all opportunities new? Or does a new opportunity signify something outside of your comfort zone? And what if I’m not ready for the opportunity, should I take it anyway because it’s available??

As a recent graduate, these are the types of questions that arise in my head. It’s a messy, confusing jumble of ‘what if’s?’, which I’m sure consume the thoughts of most twenty-somethings from time to time.

I try to keep myself open to new opportunities in various forms. In the past these have been the building blocks that got me to this stage in life: internships outside of my field of study, summer jobs in unusual settings, and volunteering for organizations that interest me. I’ve tried plenty of different things, and have come away with a seemingly random skill-set that sets me apart from my peers.  For better or worse.

So you won’t be surprised to hear that this week I am covering the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival for the Canadian Music Blog, Ride the Tempo.

The cool thing about covering this music festival is that no one seems surprised that I’m doing it. I expect shocked reactions. I expect to be questioned! [Not for any reason in particular, I just expect it]. However, no one (apart from myself) seems too concerned – which leads me to believe that opportunities are given to us for a reason. If we weren’t ready for them, then we wouldn’t be able to access them. Someone else would be given the opportunity and we would end up pouting for a bit before finding something else to pursue.

Hmm…

I guess what I’m trying to say is that opportunities should be given a chance, no matter how unusual or outside of your comfort zone. I look forward to see what comes of my music festival coverage, but I feel confident knowing that even if there’s not immediate, measurable outcome, at least I’ll come away a slightly better writer. I’ve adapted my research skills for the festival coverage, I’m expanding my music vocabulary, and I’m working on my writing – all of which will enhance my future posts for Ride the Tempo – great outcomes in themselves!

There’s always something that we can take away from every opportunity. Keep reaching for new challenges.
